A Few words about us
The private trust called ‘G.VAGHEESAM PILLAI TRUST’ was formed by the family members of Late Sri G.Vagheesam Pillai, a noted philanthropist of Chidambaram. The members of this Trust took it as a task to provide the intellectually challenged children with education and training for rehabilitation.
This was made possible with the priceless help rendered by Dr.Indira Bai, Professor of Pediatrics and Dr.Annie Mani, Professor of Psychiatry, Annamalai University. They observed that in the district of South Arcot, Tamil Nadu for every 10 to 15 children one child appeared to be mentally retarded. Majority of them are born to consanguineous couples. The incidence of consanguineous marriage is 30- 40% in South Arcot District.
Other causes noticed were birth trauma, birth asphyxia, encephalitis and poor protection against other diseases. This lead us to realize that there are numerous mentally retarded children suffering from lack of a proper institution or care to train and rehabilitate them.
‘G.V.Special School for the Mentally Retarded’ was inaugurated by the famous physician and luminary of India Dr.Rathinavel Subramaniyam on 14.04.1990(on the Tamil New Year’s Day), followed by a school for Hearing Impaired children, Vocational Training Centre and a Physiotherapy Unit.#8,R.N.Suseela Ammal Nagar,
